You can talk to someone but you cannot make them listen. Here's Julian Treasure to help. In this practical TED talk, Julian demonstrates the how-to's of powerful speaking -- from some handy vocal exercises to tips.

First, what NOT to do…

Seven deadly sins of speaking

  1. Gossip. Speaking ill of someone who is not present.

  2. Judging. Judging the person you are talking with makes it hard to speak with them.

  3. Negativity. Who likes listening to constant negativity?

  4. Complaining. Wah wah wah like a baby (though we do usually feel better after this).

  5. Excuses. Throwing blame and not taking responsibility.

  6. Lying. If we can't be trusted, why would they ever listen?

  7. The confusion of facts with opinions. When someone bombards you with their opinions as if they are facts.

Great. So now that we know what not to do. What can we do?

Remember H.A.I.L !

  1. Honesty. Be honest.

  2. Authenticity. Be yourself.

  3. Integrity. Be your word, do what you say.

  4. Love. Wish people well. Be caring, empathetic of the other person.

If we talk to others with these four things in mind. They will WANT to listen to us and we will have better communication.

Emotion fuels stories. The more impactful our stories emotionally the more engaging they will be for our audiences.

According to Biesenbach, to bulletproof your stories, ask yourself…

  1. Do I have real and relatable characters? Bring the story down to a human level. Show problems that relate to the lives of your audience.

  2. Is there drama? Is there conflict? This is how you hold an audience's attention.

  3. Are there high stakes? For an exceptional story. Something important must be at stake.

  4. Is there a clear cause and effect? Events in the story should tie together.

  5. What is the emotional core? The story should make the audience feel something. In the best stories information makes it not only to the ears of the listeners but their heart as well.

When telling the story avoid getting bogged down by the details.

  • (Not) Caring about exact dates. For most stories it rarely matters if it was a Thursday or a Wednesday or the 12th or the 15th. Little details like this should not trip you up in the story.

  • Specific numbers. A few hundred works usually works better in stories than specific numbers like “234”. For big numbers scale them. One out of 5 hamburgers is easier to visualize than 80 million hamburgers.

  • Exact names. The name of the bus driver in the bank robbery heist story probably is not a critical detail - it is okay to just say bus driver.

So next time you tell a story about the 34.53cm fish that weighs 152.23kg on May 16th at 12:20PM, or was it May 14th…
