2 Ways to Not Take Things Personally
🖖 Ciao bella gente,
Ever felt personally attacked by someone's casual comment? Or been irked by a driver honking at you on the road? Have a girl/boy cancel on your date last minute? How about breaking up?.. The good old, “It’s not you… It’s me“.
It’s HARD not to take things personally. Today we are here to help make that a bit easier.
Frederik Imbo SUCKED bigtime at NOT taking things personally. In order to train his ability to take insults, he decided become a soccer referee.
“You’re blind ref!“ “You suck!“ “Get off the field!“
In his talk, he shares his useful strategies he practices on the field to train himself to let insults be like water on a ducks back.
Main Takeaways:
1. The Universal Struggle of Taking Things Personally: Many of us can resonate with the feeling of taking things personally. From a last-minute canceled appointment making us feel less important, to the anxiety that bubbles up when someone checks their phone during our conversation – it's a shared human experience.
2. The Two Strategies to Respond:
It's not about me: This is about shifting our perspective and understanding the intention behind someone's actions. That driver honking might be in a hurry, and the person on their phone might be taking notes. By moving from a 'me' to 'we' focus, we can often bypass feelings of personal hurt.
It is about me: When an interaction genuinely stings, it might be tapping into an insecurity or past experience. These moments call for introspection and self-empathy, and occasionally, a transparent conversation with the other party. Try telling them how the interaction makes you feel.
If you have no time to watch the whole video check out his closing bit where he shows you how to not take things personally with a 20 euro bill.
Here is it.
We think you will appreciate it.
With love,
Amir & Erik
